The Roundabout House, Czech Republic

In 1981, Bohumil Lhota designed and began building his own home in the countryside
of the Czech Republic, where he lives. He calls it “The Roundabout House.” It took
him twenty years to complete, because he did it alone. However, this smart home
is amazing for two other reasons. Firstly, one part of the house is underground.
This means it is warm in winter and cool
in summer, so it saves energy on heating
and cooling. More amazingly, though, the
main, upper part of the house moves! It can
rise above the ground and turn toward any
direction. As a result, the house gets a lot of
sunlight. This saves a lot of energy. Mr. Lhota’s
idea was so brilliant that in 2012 he won the
E.ON Energy Globe Award Czech Republic.
